The Jane Austen Playlist - Love and Music of Regency England
In a captivating fusion of literature and music, Klein, a first-year PhD student in historical musicology, shares her journey to create ?The Jane Austen Playlist.? This project was inspired by her visit to a museum in 2018, where she encountered Jane Austen's personal music manuscripts after playing an 1813 Clementi square piano. As a lifelong pianist and Austen admirer, Klein explored the musical pieces that resonated with themes and characters in Austen's novels.
Austen, who dedicated an hour each morning to piano practice, often intertwined music with her writing, making it a vital aspect of her life. This led Klein to develop a performance that aligns Austen's literary works with songs that echo similar narratives. After debuting in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on Valentine's Day, this project continues to evolve as Klein, now affiliated with Colorado Christian University, receives various grants to further her research on Austen's contributions to music and literature.
Klein is set to present a new performance commissioned by the Jane Austen Society of North America at their upcoming annual meeting in Denver.
